Tempora vitae is Latin for “periods of life”. During different times of our life we embody or incorporate different longings, values, and language. The energy of the youth, the seriousness of the adults, the wisdom of old age, they eventually serve the same purpose, that is the re-creation of life. Life is a journey through time. We hear and experience what is said and done before us, we re-create what we received, and we pass it on to the next generation. We do somehow need to connect the different stages of our lives. We can only achieve that if our lives are not only a matter of self-determination (I choose what I like) but have a destiny, serve some purpose beyond our arbitrary self-interest. That is not only true for our individual lives, but also for the life of societies.
Planetary service, the other name of this same website, gives our lives a destination. It connects the lifetimes of us as individuals to a planetary life. Planetary service is not the same as global service. “Global” means: we live in one space around the world. True as that is, it doesn’t help much. Instead, it turns us into little dwarfs, into meaningless numbers in space. Maybe that is one of the reasons that so many young people go to extremes and to extremism, because they feel that like little dwarfs or numbers on the globe their life is meaningless. However, planetary service implies that we know how to move through time! We move like the planets in the sky. The planets are not fixed as the stars, but constant on the move in unpredictable windings. Planetary service means that we as well move like that. Doing so we add the one element which global space is lacking: destination. We borrow from the achievements of the past, in fragmentary ways, often, mostly biased, partial. But with our partial contributions we can become partners to each other, supporting each other to achieve a common goal. By means of this website I want to support such movements.
